Electricity

History/Important Individuals:

Benjamin Franklin- Was interested in lightning and wanted to prove that it is a stream of electofied air.

William Gilbert-Discovered that the lodestone possesed magnetic proproties and had an electric attraction. Was also the first person that coined the term "electricity".

Otto Von Guerickle-In 1660 he proved that a vacuum could exist and created a machine that produced static electricity (first electric generator).

Stephen Gray-Discovered the principle of the conduction of electricity in 1729.

Advantages of electricity...

  • Helps lots of things function. for ex., A.C and T.V
  • Makes our lives easier for ex., instead of using a candle you can use a light. Also, instead of wrapping yourself up in blankets you can turn on a heater or turn on a fire place.
  • Electricity also saves lives. For instance, if your heart isn't working right you can use a defibulator to help it beat again.

Disadvantages of electricity...

  • When too many people use electricity at the same time it goes out.
  • U.S. people pay $212 billion on electricity bills every year.
  • People who use electricity as a power source are harming the environment because half of the electricity produced in the U.S comes from power plants fueled by coal.

How it is used today-

We still use electricity in many ways, but these are just some of the things that contain electricity that we use in our daily lives...
  1. T.V
  2. A.C
  3. microwave
  4. computers

Personal Experience:

Kylie and Melissa- Making a light bulb turn on by connecting it to a circuit containing wires, battery, light bulb, light bulb holder, and battery holder. Also when there was the hurricane sandy, the electricity went out for days because the storm was so bad!
In the diagram shown above, you can see that it contains a battery, switch, light bulb and wires. The electric flow going through the wires allow the light bulb enough energy to light up/turn on, and create electricity.
